"Free IPTV" is one of the most frequent television searches and one of the most crowded with piracy offers. This page separates what is free and allowed from what only looks free. It shows the lawful options with their limits, explains why pay-TV lists and codes do not add up and says how to test a service with little risk.
01
Free IPTV: the lawful free options in Switzerland
Four routes lead lawfully to television without running costs. Each has limits you should know beforehand (state: October 2026, per the providers' pages):
| Option | What you get | Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| SRG players (Play SRF, Play RTS, Play RSI) | Live streams and catch-up libraries of the SRG channels; Play Suisse adds films and series | Funded by the licence fee and no subscription; the SRG plans a joint platform called Play+ |
| Zattoo Free | 292 channels | 1 device at a time; 10 hours per month on connected TVs, unlimited on mobile apps and laptops; no recordings and no ProSiebenSat.1 or RTL channels |
| Advertising-funded live streams | Some broadcasters stream live on their websites | Only that broadcaster's programme, no channel list |
| Free month of a licensed service | For example Zattoo Premium or Ultimate with 30 free days | Paid afterwards, so cancel before it ends |

Zattoo Free in detail: devices, limits and sign-up
Zattoo Free is the most extensive lawful free channel list in Switzerland. According to the provider it runs in the browser, in the apps for iPhone, iPad and Android and on Apple TV, Android TV, Amazon Fire TV, Samsung and Panasonic smart TVs and Xbox One. An account needs only an email address; no payment details are asked for because it is a permanently free offer, not a trial.
The limit is on the TV: there and on streaming devices a monthly allowance of 10 hours applies, and it resets at the start of each calendar month. On mobile apps and laptops streaming is unlimited. Free allows one device at a time. Recordings, restart and live pause belong to the paid tiers.
03
SRG players: live stream, catch-up and Play+
The SRG channels are the core of lawful free television. The players of SRF, RTS and RSI are funded by the licence fee and usable without a subscription. Play Suisse is a catalogue of films, series and documentaries from all language regions, but without live channels: the running programmes are in the players of the individual channels.
The SRG has announced that it will merge all video and audio content of RSI, RTR, RTS and SRF and Play Suisse on one platform called Play+. Check the SRG's own pages for the current state.
04
Free IPTV for Sky and sport: why it does not work
Searches such as "free IPTV Sky" aim at pay-TV content without a subscription. There is no lawful route to it: Sky pays for exclusive rights and funds them through its subscriptions. A free list that contains Sky channels therefore distributes those channels without a licence.
For viewers this mostly has no criminal consequence, according to the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property (IGE), but for the people running the lists it does. In practice the bill looks different: such lists are short-lived, have no support and come from sources you do not know. The legal position is explained in IPTV illegal or legal in Switzerland.
If you want to watch pay TV lawfully and for less, check the trial months and promotions of the providers themselves or choose a different package with sport.

05
Free IPTV playlists and codes: why they fail
Searches for a free playlist or a free code lead to lists built on the same unlicensed sources as paid piracy offers. That they cost nothing changes nothing. You notice it in daily use:
- Channels vanish without warning because the source is switched off
- There is no support and no contact person
- The origin of the list and of the apps that recommend it is unknown
- Anyone who passes a list on or runs one makes works available and leaves private use

06
Free IPTV apps: the genuinely free category
What is genuinely free is the player software. VLC and Kodi are open source and completely free, and IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate can be used in a basic version without paying. Anyone searching for a free IPTV app reliably finds a player.
The app, however, brings no channels. A free app does not make an unlicensed source lawful, and a paid app does not make it unlawful. Which players exist and how they differ is shown in IPTV apps and players; what a playlist is and what public lists contain is in IPTV playlists and M3U files.
07
IPTV test and free IPTV trial: how to test with little risk
An IPTV test is a trial period for a service, normally one month. Zattoo Premium and Ultimate are free for 30 days and can be cancelled monthly. The operator of this site offers a one-month trial access, see IPTV pricing in Switzerland; it is paid, not free.
The full checklist is in the guide IPTV trial in Switzerland. For a trial to tell you something, proceed like this:
- Note when the trial ends and cancel beforehand if you do not want to continue
- Check the channels you actually watch, not the total number
- Watch in the evening at peak time, when the load is highest
- Test replay and the programme guide on your own devices
- Ask support something concrete while you are still a prospect
08
Is free IPTV legal? The short answer
It depends on the source, not on the price. Lawful are catch-up libraries, live streams of the broadcasters themselves, free tiers of licensed services and free players. Unlawful is offering channels without rights, even if they cost nothing. The details and the articles of the Copyright Act are in the legal guide.
09
Free IPTV not enough? Cheaper lawful alternatives
If the free tiers do not suffice, you do not have to jump to the biggest package. There are several steps in between:
- Starter packages of licensed OTT services with fewer channels, cancellable monthly
- A single month for a season or an event, then cancel
- TV options already included in your existing internet or mobile subscription, which often go unused
- Sharing a subscription in the household, as far as the terms allow several streams
- Comparison by the channels you really watch, with the criteria from Best IPTV provider in Switzerland

The order in which to find free IPTV
Free and lawful IPTV starts with the SRG players, continues with Zattoo Free for more channels and mobile TV, then uses a free month if you want to check a paid offer, and ends with the free players as a tool for everything you obtain lawfully. Free pay TV does not exist; anyone who promises it is not offering a licence. The overview of all licensed services, with sources, is at IPTV Switzerland.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Is there free and lawful IPTV in Switzerland?
Yes. The SRG players with live streams and catch-up are free, as is the Zattoo Free tier with 292 channels. Pay-TV channels do not exist lawfully for free.
What does Zattoo Free offer?
Per the provider, 292 channels on one device at a time. On smart TVs and streaming devices a monthly allowance of 10 hours applies, on mobile apps and laptops use is unlimited. Recordings belong to the paid tiers.
Is free IPTV for Sky possible?
Not lawfully. Sky funds exclusive rights through its subscriptions, and a free list with Sky channels distributes them without a licence. Check the provider's own trial months and promotions instead.
Are free IPTV playlists legal?
Mostly not. Freely circulating playlists for pay-TV channels use unlicensed streams. Anyone who passes them on or runs them makes works available and leaves private use.
What is a free IPTV code?
A set of access details, mostly an Xtream Codes combination or an M3U link, handed out for free. Whether it is lawful depends on the service behind it; for pay-TV channels that is almost never the case.
Is there a free IPTV trial?
Yes, with licensed providers, for example 30 free days with Zattoo Premium and Ultimate. Note when the trial ends and cancel beforehand if you do not want to continue.
Which IPTV apps are free?
VLC and Kodi are open source and free; IPTV Smarters Pro and TiviMate offer a basic version without payment. An app brings no channels, though; these come from the service.
Can I watch free IPTV on a smart TV?
Yes, with Zattoo Free on Samsung and Panasonic smart TVs, Android TV, Apple TV and Fire TV, though limited to 10 hours per month there. The SRG players also run on many smart TVs.
Will I be punished for using a free playlist?
For pure viewing, the IGE says criminal law does not pursue viewers. Passing on and uploading are risky, as are the practical consequences such as shutdown and missing support.
