Watch Swiss TV abroad: what works, what is blocked and why

Quick answer

Watch Swiss TV abroad: Mostly not live. SRF says its live streams are only available inside Switzerland for legal reasons, though most of its own productions can be watched on demand afterwards. On a Swiss Zattoo account, Zattoo's help page says that outside Switzerland only recordings can be streamed, for up to 90 days per trip, with a paid plan and without a VPN. Rights are sold country by country, which is why.

You are on holiday, on a work stay or in a new country, and your Swiss TV is gone. The reason is rights, not technology: broadcasters buy the right to show a programme in a territory, so a stream has to know where you are. This post sets out what SRF and Zattoo say about use abroad (state: October 2026), what that means for a Swiss account and what to check before you travel.

01

Why you cannot watch Swiss TV abroad as at home

SRF puts it plainly on its help page: for legal reasons its live streams are only available inside Switzerland. Many programmes, sport above all, are licensed per country, so the broadcaster has to block the stream outside the territory it paid for. That blocking is called geoblocking, and it applies to apps as well as websites.

02

What SRF lets you watch abroad

According to SRF, most of its own productions can be watched on demand on Play SRF after the broadcast, also abroad. Productions bought from others carry a geoblock and are available only inside Switzerland, and some programmes are online for a limited time. Special livestreams that are not listed on its livestream page are set up without a geoblock when copyright allows.

03

Zattoo abroad: the rules by account

Zattoo's help page, read in October 2026, sets out when a paid subscription works abroad. The Swiss column is the one that matters here:

Using Zattoo abroad, by account

With a VPN, proxy or hostingNoNoNo

04

The conditions Zattoo attaches

Beyond the account type, the page lists what must be true before you travel:

  • An active paid subscription, since Zattoo Free cannot be used abroad
  • The app already downloaded and the account already registered at home; neither can be done abroad
  • A stable internet connection, and no VPN, proxy, hosting service or Private Relay
  • Use for up to 90 days per trip; renewed use abroad requires that you have used Zattoo at home in between
  • A temporary stay: a permanent move abroad is not covered, and the country of use can be changed only by Zattoo's support after a permanent change of residence

05

Swisscom and other operators

Operators describe their boxes as home products, and the rules differ by operator and plan. Swisscom's blue TV S page mentions only that customers with a mobile subscription may pay data roaming costs when they watch recordings abroad. If you rely on a Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt app on a trip, ask the operator before you leave which functions work in which country, rather than trying it at the hotel.

06

VPNs: why they are not a clean fix

Guides sell a VPN as the way round geoblocking. Zattoo's terms for use abroad exclude VPNs and proxies, and its requirements page says VPN use affects streaming quality and is not supported. Using one can breach a provider's terms and can get a streaming account blocked, so it is a risk to the account you pay for, not a fix. The better routes are on-demand content, recordings and national apps in the country you are in.

07

If you are away temporarily: the fee

Leaving for a while does not end the Swiss fee. SERAFE says that someone who goes abroad only temporarily and keeps living in Switzerland remains liable. Only a real move out of Switzerland changes that, in which case the residents' registration office informs SERAFE and the fee is refunded pro rata. The rules are in the radio and TV fee in Switzerland.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

Can I watch SRF live TV abroad?

Not live. SRF says its live streams are only available inside Switzerland for legal reasons. Most of its own productions can be watched on demand on Play SRF afterwards.

Does Zattoo work abroad on a Swiss account?

Only for recordings, according to Zattoo. Outside Switzerland, live TV, replay, restart and on demand are not available, use is limited to 90 days per trip and Zattoo Free does not work abroad.

Can I use a VPN to watch Swiss TV abroad?

Zattoo excludes VPNs, proxies and hosting from use abroad, and a VPN can breach a provider's terms or get an account blocked. It is a risk, not a supported way.

Do I still pay the radio and TV fee when I am abroad temporarily?

Yes, if you keep living in Switzerland. SERAFE says that a temporary stay abroad does not end the obligation.
