"IPTV Switzerland" hides very different searches: people who want to understand the technology, people comparing providers, people setting up TV after moving to Switzerland and people who want to know what is lawful. This page is the starting point for all of them. It compares the licensed options, explains the speeds and hardware involved and points to the in-depth guides. The provider details were checked on their own websites in October 2026.
01
IPTV Switzerland: the licensed options compared
The table shows the main legal routes to live television over the internet. The data comes from the providers' own websites (state: October 2026). Channels and prices change, so only the provider's site is authoritative.

|---|---|---|---|---|
| Swisscom blue TV | App (blue TV Air) and TV-Box | Per Swisscom, the app also works without Swisscom internet | Over 250 live via the app; 150+ to 330+ depending on the subscription | Replay up to 7 days, up to 2,000 hours of recordings |

IPTV in Switzerland in one minute
IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television: TV that reaches your home as a stream of data instead of via antenna, cable or satellite. The experience stays that of classic television, with a fixed channel list, a programme guide, replay and recordings. Only the transport path changes.
Two technical variants exist. Network operators such as Swisscom or Sunrise deliver their TV offer inside their own managed network and hand it to you via a box or an app. Pure streaming services such as Zattoo use the open internet and work on any connection. How the signal gets from the channel to your living room is explained step by step in What is IPTV?.

03
IPTV, streaming and cable: four ways TV reaches Swiss homes
The terms are mixed up constantly. The table separates the four ways television reaches Swiss homes today:
| Route | How it works | Examples in Switzerland | Typical trait |
|---|---|---|---|
| IPTV (managed) | Through the provider's managed network, with a box or app | Swisscom blue TV, Sunrise TV, Salt TV | Fixed channel list, guide and replay; often tied to an internet subscription |
| OTT live TV | Over the open internet, on any connection | Zattoo, Teleboy | Cancellable month to month, apps for many devices |
| On-demand streaming | Content on request, no channel list | Netflix, Disney+, Play Suisse | No linear programme |
| Cable and satellite | Classic reception via a cable network or dish | Cable networks, satellite | The SRG ended its terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T) on 3 June 2019 |
04
IPTV in numbers: how Swiss homes receive TV in 2026
Zattoo's 2026 survey puts internet TV at 71% of households: 39% get IPTV from a telecom operator and 32% use a TV streaming service. Cable (30%) and satellite (9%) keep slipping, and for 37% IPTV is already the main way to watch.
Zattoo sells streaming itself, so read these as industry survey data. The tables, the device figures and the caveats are in How the Swiss watch TV
05
Which route suits you? A decision aid
The right option depends less on price than on where you are starting from. The table helps with the first decision:
| Your situation | Natural option | Why |
|---|---|---|
| You have internet with Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt | That provider's TV offer | Box or app is often part of the combined package, with one contact for everything |
| You do not want an operator contract | An OTT service such as Zattoo | Works on any connection; Premium and Ultimate can be cancelled month to month |
| You mainly watch SRF, RTS or RSI | The SRG players | Funded by the licence fee, no extra subscription |
| Several people watch at once | A plan with more streams | Zattoo Ultimate allows up to 4, Sunrise TV 5 simultaneous streams |
| You mostly watch series and films | On-demand services | A live-TV subscription would add little |
06
New in Switzerland: setting up IPTV as an English speaker
Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt and Zattoo all publish English versions of their sites, so comparing the offers is possible without German, French or Italian. Before you sign, check two things: whether the channels you watch are on the provider's channel list, and that the contract terms you accept are in a language you can read.
Do not assume that a channel from your home country is included. Swiss packages are built around the SRG programmes plus German, French and Italian channels, and extra channels are often sold as language or international packages. Zattoo, for example, lists international packages as add-ons. Write down the ten channels you actually watch and check each one in the public channel list.
Whatever route you take, the radio and television fee is separate: since 2019 it is a device-independent fee, and in principle each Swiss household pays it, according to the Federal Office of Communications (OFCOM). An IPTV subscription neither replaces it nor changes it.
07
Channels in Swiss IPTV packages
The channel list is the core of every offer. Swiss TV packages include the SRG programmes (SRF 1, SRF zwei, RTS 1, RTS 2, RSI LA 1, RSI LA 2), many German, French and Italian channels and Swiss private broadcasters.
Pay and sports channels are usually sold as add-on or language packages. Swisscom lists its blue TV subscriptions at 150+ channels (blue TV S), 290+ (M) and 330+ (L and XL), Sunrise has language packages and Salt has international ones. Compare channel lists not by the total number but by the ten channels you watch and by the count of HD and Full HD channels: Zattoo, for instance, states 121 Full HD and 238 HD channels for Ultimate.
08
Internet speed: what IPTV really needs
A single stream needs less than most people assume. What counts is the sum of simultaneous streams plus whatever the rest of the household is doing. Zattoo's support centre gives these figures:
| Quality | Per stream | Guide value for the home connection |
|---|---|---|
| SD | 3 Mbit/s | 16 to 30 Mbit/s (Zattoo Free) |
| HD | 5 Mbit/s | 30 to 50 Mbit/s (Premium, up to 2 streams) |
| Full HD | 8 Mbit/s | 50 to 100 Mbit/s (Ultimate, up to 4 streams) |
09
Stability beats peak speed
Fluctuations show up as buffering, stutter or dropouts, mostly in the evening peak. Zattoo advises connecting the TV with a network cable rather than Wi-Fi and, if Wi-Fi is unavoidable, using the 5 GHz band. 4K needs a good deal more than Full HD, depending on the service; Netflix, for instance, recommends 15 Mbit/s for Ultra HD.
10
Do you need an IPTV box?
Not necessarily. Most smart TVs, streaming sticks and Apple TVs run the providers' apps directly. A box is mainly an operator product: the Sunrise TV Box belongs to Up TV L, and the Salt TV Box is built on Android TV and comes with Salt Home for new customers. Swisscom says a subscription can run on up to five TVs (Swisscom TV-Box, Apple TV 4K or smart TV) with the Multiroom Max option.
Which hardware fits which setup is covered in the guide to IPTV devices; the software side, from player apps to M3U playlists, in IPTV apps and players. The two most searched apps have their own guides: IPTV Smarters Pro and Smart IPTV.
11
What does IPTV cost in Switzerland? How providers show their prices
With the operators TV usually comes as part of the internet or mobile subscription. Add-ons are listed separately, above all extra boxes: a second TV needs an additional Sunrise TV Box.
Pure streaming services show their prices on their own pages. Zattoo Premium and Ultimate start with 30 free days and can be cancelled monthly. Zattoo Free costs nothing but is limited to 10 hours per month on smart TV. To try an offer before paying, use the checklist in IPTV trial in Switzerland.
Prices move, which is why each figure carries its date. What this site offers itself is shown on the IPTV pricing in Switzerland page.
12
Free TV: what is free and lawful in Switzerland
Watching TV for free is possible lawfully, within clear limits. The full comparison, with trials, is in Free IPTV in Switzerland:
- Live streams and catch-up libraries of SRF, RTS and RSI are funded by the licence fee and usable without a subscription
- Zattoo Free offers, per the provider, 292 channels with 10 hours per month on smart TV
- Some broadcasters offer advertising-funded live streams
13
Watching Swiss TV while abroad
Licensing is tied to territory, which limits what you can watch away from home. Swisscom says that abroad the blue TV app lets you watch recordings and films offline, while most live TV is blocked for licensing reasons. With the Multiroom Max option you can also use blue TV at a second address in Switzerland, such as a holiday home. For other providers, the terms of the subscription tell you what works outside Switzerland.
14
Is IPTV legal in Switzerland? The short version
The technology is legal; what counts is whether the provider holds the rights to its channels. Operating or reselling services without a licence is punishable. Which provisions of the copyright act apply, what the Swiss Federal Institute of Intellectual Property says about private viewing and what resellers risk is covered, with sources, in IPTV illegal or legal in Switzerland.
15
Typical problems and quick fixes
Most faults can be fixed without support:
- Buffering and stutter: usually Wi-Fi; a network cable to the box or TV fixes most cases
- Black picture but sound: restart the device or update the app; if that fails, try a different app
- Wrong programme times: set the app's time zone to Europe/Zurich
- Dropouts only in the evening: an overloaded line or router, and with a licensed service also a case for support
- A channel is missing: check whether it is in your plan or in an add-on or language package

FAQ
Frequently asked questions
What does IPTV mean?
IPTV means Internet Protocol Television. The TV programme is delivered as a data stream over the internet and played by a box, smart TV or app, with a channel list, programme guide and often replay.
Is IPTV legal in Switzerland?
Yes, if the provider holds the broadcasting rights, as Swisscom, Sunrise, Salt and Zattoo do. Operating and selling unlicensed services is punishable; the details are in the legal guide.
Which IPTV services are licensed in Switzerland?
Swisscom blue TV, Sunrise TV, Salt TV and the OTT service Zattoo, plus the free SRG players Play SRF, Play RTS and Play RSI. Always check the provider's own site for current channels and prices.
How much does IPTV cost in Switzerland?
With the operators TV is usually part of the internet or mobile subscription. Zattoo's Premium and Ultimate start with 30 free days and cancel monthly (state: October 2026); its offers page shows the current price.
What internet speed do I need for IPTV?
Zattoo gives 3 Mbit/s per SD stream, 5 Mbit/s for HD and 8 Mbit/s for Full HD. For the home connection it advises 16 to 100 Mbit/s depending on the plan, because streams and other uses add up.
Do I need a special box for IPTV?
Not necessarily. Most smart TVs, streaming sticks and Apple TVs run the providers' apps directly. A box is mainly an operator product, such as the Salt TV Box or the Sunrise TV Box.
Can I get English-language channels in Switzerland?
Check the provider's channel list for each channel you want before you subscribe. Swiss packages centre on the SRG programmes plus German, French and Italian channels, and extra channels are often add-on packages.
Is free IPTV available in Switzerland?
Lawfully yes: the SRG players are free and Zattoo Free offers 292 channels with 10 hours per month on smart TV. Circulating playlists and free codes for pay channels are not a lawful offer.
Is IPTV the same as streaming?
Not quite. IPTV delivers a linear programme with a channel list, while services such as Netflix offer on-demand content. In between sit live OTT services such as Zattoo, which deliver a channel list over the open internet.
Do I still pay the TV licence fee with IPTV?
Yes. The radio and television fee is device-independent, and in principle each Swiss household pays it, according to OFCOM. An IPTV subscription does not replace it.
Can I still watch TV via antenna in Switzerland?
Not from the SRG: it ended terrestrial broadcasting (DVB-T) on 3 June 2019. Today TV arrives via cable, satellite or the internet.
