"IPTV subscription Switzerland" leads to very different offers: operator bundles, streaming services you can cancel monthly and codes from resellers. This page explains how the types of subscription differ, what the contract must say, which extra costs many people overlook and what lies behind "IPTV codes". It is about the mechanics of the contract; the prices of individual plans are on pages of their own.
01
IPTV subscription in Switzerland: four types compared
The word "subscription" covers four models that differ widely in commitment, costs and safeguards:
| Type | How it works | Term and cancellation | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Operator bundle | TV is part of internet or mobile at Swisscom, Sunrise or Salt | Follows the contract of the connection | Extra costs for boxes, replay, recordings and language packages |
| OTT subscription | Live TV over the open internet, for example Zattoo | Zattoo Premium and Ultimate can be cancelled monthly, per the provider | Compare streams, quality and the limits of the free tier |
| Subscription with a device | A box or stick with a subscription "included" for a year or more | The term is often only in the offer, rarely in terms and conditions | Whether the subscription is lawful decides the whole package |
| Reseller code | Login details or an M3U link to a service the seller merely passes on | Usually no contract, no terms, no way to cancel | No contact person, often a short life |
02
The costs people forget with an IPTV subscription
The base price is rarely the whole bill. These items are stated by the providers on their own pages (state: October 2026):
- Sunrise: each additional TV Box is an extra. Replay ads can only be skipped with the separate Skip Ads option
- Salt: the Salt TV Box comes with Salt Home for new customers. 7-day replay, Replay Max without extra ads and Recordings Max with up to 1,000 recordings are options, depending on the bundle
- Zattoo: the free tier offers only 10 hours per month on smart TV, while Premium and Ultimate start with 30 free days
- Swisscom: running a subscription on several TVs needs the Multiroom Max option
- Language packages: Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt offer additional channel packages, booked separately
03
Term, renewal and cancellation: what the contract must say
Three details decide how long you are tied: the minimum term, whether the contract renews automatically and the notice period. A 12-month IPTV subscription that renews silently with three months' notice binds you far longer than the order price suggests. Anyone who wants to take out an IPTV subscription therefore reads the terms and conditions before ordering, not when trying to cancel.
Swiss law protects against particularly lopsided clauses: a person acts unfairly in particular if they use general terms and conditions that, in breach of good faith, create a considerable and unjustified imbalance between contractual rights and obligations to the prejudice of consumers (Art. 8 UCA). Whether a particular clause falls under this is for a court to decide in a dispute.
These points should be stated clearly:
- The minimum term in months
- Whether the contract renews automatically and for how long
- The notice period and the permitted form: email, letter or customer account
- Whether the provider may change the price during the term
- What happens to prepaid time if the service fails or is shut down
04
Right of withdrawal for an IPTV subscription: what applies in Switzerland
Unlike in the EU, Swiss law has no general right of withdrawal for online purchases. According to the State Secretariat for Economic Affairs (SECO), such a right exists only for doorstep sales (Art. 40a ff. of the Code of Obligations) and for certain special contracts such as consumer credit.
So whether you can send a subscription back depends on the provider's terms; some grant a period voluntarily, and a foreign site accessible in Switzerland may fall under EU law. The same goes for trial access: clarify before buying whether and how you can get out. The refund policy of this site's operator is one example.
05
Foreign provider or Swiss provider: which court, which law?
English speakers in Switzerland often sign up with providers based abroad. SECO explains that the domicile of buyer and seller has a significant effect on the court that is competent and the law that applies.
If the provider has its domicile or an establishment in the EU, Iceland or Norway, the Lugano Convention lets the consumer sue either at their own domicile or at the provider's (Art. 16 Lugano Convention); the provider's activity must however be directed at the state where the consumer is domiciled. Where the convention does not apply, the Private International Law Act decides, and for international cases Art. 120 of that Act points to the law of the consumer's habitual residence.
These are general rules, not advice: for a concrete case, a consumer organisation or a lawyer is the right contact. Against an anonymous operator with no valid address, all of this remains theory.
06
Buy IPTV: "IPTV code" or subscription?
Around IPTV the word "code" circulates as though it were a product of its own. That is misleading: an IPTV code is a set of access details for a service, comparable to the username and password of an account.
The decisive point follows. A code is neither lawful nor unlawful in itself; what matters is that the service behind it holds the broadcasting rights. Anyone who wants to buy IPTV in the form of a code is really buying a subscription, but without a contract, without an imprint and without a contact person.
Serious providers therefore work with a customer account: you register, see the terms, pay by a traceable channel and can cancel. If only a code remains, that frame is often missing too.
07
Xtream Codes, M3U link, activation code and STB code: the differences
Four technically different things are shortened to "code" in everyday use. Telling them apart helps you classify an offer:

| Term | What it is technically | What it is used for | Legally |
|---|---|---|---|
| Xtream Codes login | Server address, username and password | A player app pulls the channel list from it | Access to a service; legality depends on the service |
| M3U link | Address of a playlist file | The channel list is loaded into a player | An open standard format that can also be used lawfully |
| App activation code | Device identifier that unlocks an app | You pay for the app, not for content | Allowed; unrelated to broadcasting rights |
| STB code | MAC address of the device for portal-based receivers | The channel list is loaded via the device | Identifies the device, not the account |
08
Why marketplace codes go wrong
Marketplaces and classified sites regularly show IPTV codes and "annual accesses" at very low prices. The pattern is always the same: what is being resold is access to a panel the seller neither runs nor controls.
In practice that means two things. These accesses have a short life: they often stop after a few weeks, when rights holders go after the infrastructure. And there is no refund, because neither the seller nor the platform stands behind a service that should not have been sold like this.
If you have already paid, check your payment method, stop any running charges and change passwords you reused elsewhere. The legal picture is set out in IPTV illegal or legal in Switzerland.

09
Buy IPTV as a subscription or as a device: the difference
A search for "buy IPTV" can mean two different things: a subscription to a TV service or a device that can play IPTV. Hardware is unproblematic: an IPTV box or a streaming stick is ordinary electronics. Which device suits which use is explained in the guide to IPTV devices.
The "box with one year included" is different: a subscription is sold with it, and its lawfulness decides the whole package.
11
Best IPTV subscription and cheap IPTV subscription: choosing without a ranking
There is no best IPTV subscription for everybody. The right one contains the channels you actually watch, runs on your devices and costs a rate you will still accept in a year. A cheap IPTV subscription is not unlawful in itself, but a very low price combined with thousands of channels and premium sport is the clearest warning sign.
The criteria for comparing providers, with an eight-point table, are in the guide Best IPTV provider in Switzerland. For the plans offered on this site, with the monthly price under each figure, see IPTV pricing in Switzerland.
12
Trial period: using it well
Lawful free trials and free tiers are compared in Free IPTV in Switzerland. A trial is worth it if you use it with a purpose: do the channels you really watch work? How does the service behave in the evening at peak load? Do replay and the programme guide work? Can you cancel before it ends without obstacles? It is also best to test support while you are still a prospect.
13
Checklist: contract and payment before you subscribe
You should be able to tick these points before the first payment:
- Term, automatic renewal and notice period are in writing in the terms
- The final price in francs is visible at checkout and extra costs are listed one by one
- You know how a withdrawal or refund works
- You pay with a method that allows a chargeback, such as a credit card, not crypto or a gift code
- You have saved the order confirmation and the terms
- You start with a short term rather than a prepayment of several years
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
How much does an IPTV subscription cost in Switzerland?
With the operators TV is usually part of the internet or mobile subscription, with extras such as an additional box or replay on top. Zattoo's Premium and Ultimate start with a free month and cancel monthly. The pricing page of this site gives an overview of the operator's plans.
What is an IPTV code?
An IPTV code is a set of access details for a service, most often an Xtream Codes combination or an M3U link. It is not a product of its own; its legality depends on whether the service behind it holds the broadcasting rights.
What are Xtream Codes?
Xtream Codes means an access made of a server address, a username and a password, with which a player app pulls the channel list of a service. It is access to a service, not a product.
Are IPTV codes from marketplaces lawful?
That depends on the service behind them. Very cheap annual accesses on marketplaces are mostly resold panel accesses, without contract, imprint or refund.
Can I cancel an IPTV subscription monthly?
That depends on the provider. Zattoo Premium and Ultimate can be cancelled monthly according to the provider; operator bundles follow the contract of the internet or mobile subscription. The terms always prevail.
Is there a right of withdrawal for an IPTV subscription?
Not by law: according to SECO, Swiss law has no general right of withdrawal for online purchases. The provider's terms say whether you can withdraw.
What extra costs come with an operator subscription?
Depending on the provider, an additional TV Box (Sunrise), replay options (Salt), multiroom (Swisscom Multiroom Max), recordings and language packages.
Is a 12-month IPTV subscription worth it?
Only if the provider is transparent and regulates the contract clearly. With unknown providers, prepaying a year or more is risky, because in a dispute you recover little.
What happens if the provider disappears after I pay?
Stop payments, tell your bank or card issuer, keep the evidence and report the case. The steps are in the provider guide on this site.
How do I cancel an IPTV subscription?
In the form the terms provide, so by email, letter or in the customer account, and before the notice period ends. Keep the confirmation as proof.
