Ten years ago TV needed a box, and operators still sell one. Today most smart TVs run the apps, so the real question is what a box adds. This post sets out what each provider states (state: October 2026) and where an app falls short.
01
Do you need a TV box? What each service says
From the providers' own pages:
| Service | Box | App or smart TV |
|---|---|---|
| Swisscom blue TV | TV-Box recommended for the full experience; up to 5 per household; UHD via TV-Box 5 | Works without a TV-Box: browser, app, third-party provider; app on most smart TVs and Apple TV 4K |
| Sunrise TV | TV Box or IPTV Box with Up TV L; Wi-Fi possible, cable recommended | Sunrise TV App with Up TV L and Up TV M; Up TV M is app only |
| Salt TV | Salt TV Box on Android TV with Google Assistant, Chromecast and the Play Store; included with Salt Home | Salt TV app on the box and on Apple TV |
| Zattoo | None needed | Apps for smart TVs, streaming devices, phones, tablets and browsers |
02
What a box adds that the app does not
Swisscom lists what is not available through its app on smart TVs and Apple TV 4K: radio, teletext, HbbTV, subtitles and blue+ in UHD. Those are the functions a TV-Box adds, and they are the reason Swisscom recommends the box for the TV in the living room. Whether they matter is personal: if you watch live news and series in HD, the app is enough.
03
Smart TV and streaming stick
If your TV is a recent smart TV, it probably runs the apps. For an older TV, a streaming device does the job: Zattoo lists Amazon Fire TV and Stick, Google Chromecast, Apple TV, Nvidia Shield and the Xbox, and says that on some of these Zattoo is preinstalled. Swisscom's Apple TV page says the blue TV app runs on Apple TV 2015 models and newer. The list of supported TVs is in Zattoo devices.
04
The operator box: Swisscom, Sunrise and Salt
Each operator sells a box that belongs to its own service. Sunrise supplies the IPTV Box or the Sunrise TV Box, which it says differ only in design; Salt's TV Box is built on Android TV and, with Salt Home, comes with the bundle for new customers; Swisscom's TV-Box belongs to the customer according to its help page, with no obligation to return it. A box is tied to the service, so it is not a purchase to make before you choose the provider.
05
Network for a box or an app
Either route needs a stable connection. Sunrise says the TV Box can use Wi-Fi but a cable is more stable, and Swisscom's Apple TV 4K supports Wi-Fi, a cable or a powerline kit. See fixing TV buffering if the picture stutters, and internet speed for TV streaming for what the line must carry.
06
A short decision guide
Use this order:
- You have a smart TV from the last few years and want live TV: try the provider's app first
- You want radio, teletext, HbbTV or UHD from Swisscom: get the TV-Box
- You are a Salt Home customer: the box comes with the bundle
- You use Zattoo: you never need a box, only a supported device
- You have several TVs: count the streams first, see a second TV in Switzerland
