A second TV in the bedroom or the kitchen is a common reason a TV bill grows, and each provider solves it differently: another box, another app login or another stream. This post sets out what each provider states (state: October 2026) and how to count what you need.
01
Second TV in Switzerland: what each provider offers
As read from the providers' own pages; the current prices are on each page:
| Service | How a second TV works | Limit stated |
|---|---|---|
| Swisscom blue TV | Another TV-Box, an app on a smart TV or Apple TV, or the add-on Multiroom Max for blue TV on additional TVs | Up to 5 TV-Boxes per household; Multiroom Max covers up to 4 additional TVs |
| Sunrise TV | An additional TV Box for each additional TV, or the Sunrise TV App | 5 simultaneous streams and 6 user profiles |
| Salt TV | The Multiroom option puts TV on an additional TV | Described on Salt's option page |
| Zattoo | The app on each TV, with parallel streams by plan | Free: 1 device at a time; Premium: 2 streams; Ultimate: up to 4 streams |
02
Count streams, not TVs
What limits you is how many TVs show a programme at the same moment, not how many TVs you own. Two TVs that are never on at the same time need one stream; a family with a TV in the living room, one in the bedroom and a laptop in the evening needs three. Zattoo makes this explicit with its per-plan stream limits, and Sunrise states five. For Swisscom, the TV-Box limit and the Multiroom Max add-on do the same job.
03
Box or app in the second room
A second room does not always need a second box. Swisscom says its blue TV app runs on most smart TVs and on Apple TV 4K, with limits such as no radio, teletext, HbbTV or subtitles through the app on those devices, and its Apple TV page says the app runs on Apple TV from the 2015 models and that you order an additional stream for it. Sunrise's Up TV M gives the app only. A box is the better choice where you want the full operator experience; an app is enough where you want live TV and replay.
04
Network: cable or Wi-Fi to the second TV
Every extra TV is another stream on your home network. Sunrise says its TV Box can use Wi-Fi but recommends a cable because it is more stable, and Zattoo calls a LAN cable the most stable option for a TV. Swisscom's Apple TV 4K can connect over Wi-Fi, by Ethernet cable or with a powerline connection kit. If the second TV is far from the router, a cable or powerline link usually beats a faster plan; see fixing TV buffering.
05
How to choose
A practical order:
- Write down which TVs can be on at the same time
- Check the stream limit of the plan you are considering against that number
- Decide box or app for each room, and note which functions the app lacks
- Check the speed you need for all streams together, see internet speed for TV streaming
- Add the cost of the extra box or option from the provider's page to the bill, see TV costs in Switzerland
